The Bay After
South Bay Bands, Cover South Bay Bands
"Various Artist"
[Raw Power Records]
"The Bay After" is the long-awaited compilation put out by Raw Power Records that features today's top South Bay punk bands covering tunes originally written and played by the heavily influential local bands that came out in the late 1970s and early 1980s like Black Flag, The Descendants, The Minutemen, and the Circle Jerks. After listening to it, two major things came to my mind; First, that the South Bay still has a lively, energetic, and vibrant punk scene, and second, as vibrant as it is, it still has a ways to go before measuring up with it's forefathers, (many of whom are still very active in the scene). Granted, the older bands created (or helped to create), a revolution that turned worldwide popular music on it¹s head. Just riding on it's shoulder (à la Pennywise, sorely missed here), is a tough enough order.
Philosophy aside - there are many good performances here, and several excellent ones that make this disc well ... while the One Handed Readers ultimately steal the show with their energized, tuneful, and intense reading of Anti's "Repressive Aggression."
... while The One Handed Readers completely transcend "Repressed," making it sound like they wrote it themselves.
